FAQs

What is Scuba Diving?

Scuba diving is an underwater adventure where you use special equipment to breathe and explore the ocean. It’s like stepping into a whole new world filled with vibrant marine life and stunning landscapes. Scuba Diving can become an exciting recreation for you, while also enabling you to research and work towards the conservation of these precious underwater ecosystems.

Both Neil and Havelock Islands are fantastic for scuba diving certifications! Havelock, while slightly more crowded, offers iconic dive sites and vibrant marine life, and Neil is quieter and more weather dependent, with untouched reefs and plentiful fishes, perfect for learning. Choose based on your vibe—adventurous or peaceful! We strongly advise you to sign up for our combo packages and dive on both Havelock and Neil Islands to experience the greatness of the Andamans.

The best time to visit the Andaman Islands for scuba diving is October to May, when the weather is sunny, the seas are calm, and the underwater world is at its vibrant best.

Best Diving Months: October to May
October-November: The islands are fresh after the monsoon with lush greenery and calm waters. It’s a quieter time with excellent diving conditions.

December-February: Peak diving season with cool, pleasant weather and superb underwater visibility. Be mindful of occasional cyclones in December.

March-May: As summer begins, the water is at its clearest, ideal for spotting marine life. Dive sites are less crowded, and conditions are warm and inviting.

Monsoon Season (June to September)
Monsoons bring heavy rains, rough seas, and limited diving opportunities. Strong currents and low visibility make this period less suitable for diving.

Pro Tip: Book your dive trips early during peak season to secure spots, and always check weather forecasts if visiting in December. Whether you’re exploring colorful reefs, spotting sharks, or enjoying serene beaches, the Andaman Islands promise an unforgettable diving adventure!

Visiting the Andaman Islands during June, July, and August offers a peaceful escape but comes with challenges for scuba diving. Monsoon rains bring lush greenery and fewer tourists, making it a quiet and budget-friendly time to visit. However, rough seas and reduced underwater visibility can limit diving opportunities. Many dive centers operate on a restricted schedule or close entirely, so it’s essential to check their availability in advance.

If diving conditions aren’t ideal, there’s still plenty to enjoy. Explore land based activities with Earthsong in Havelock Island for a meditative journey within nature. Short treks and nature walks are possible during dry spells, offering a chance to soak in the island’s rainy-season beauty.

For the best scuba diving experience, plan your trip between October and May, when the weather is calmer and dive sites are fully accessible. However, if you’re looking for tranquility and don’t mind adapting to the rains, the Andamans in monsoon still have their own charm. Be sure to pack for rainy weather and stay updated on forecasts to make the most of your trip.

I am not a swimmer. Can I experience scuba diving in the Andaman Islands?
Of course! You can sign up for the PADI Discover Scuba Diving Program, an experienced dive professional will accompany you at all times. They can swim for you if required! For the Open Water Course swimming is a must as we will ask you to swim tor 200 meters (or snorkel for 300 meters) and float for 10 minutes in water to deep to stand up in.
The minimum age for scuba diving is 10 years old for most PADI programs. There’s no maximum age as long as you’re healthy and meet the medical requirements. However, as per local Andaman rules, the minimum age is 12 years and maximum age is 60 years.
Is Scuba Diving safe?

Yes, scuba diving is safe when done with trained professionals and proper equipment. At ScubaLov, safety is our top priority, and we ensure you’re guided every step of the way by experienced instructors. All our programs and gear comply with ISO standards of safety and quality.

Feeling claustrophobic is common for some beginners, but don’t worry! Our instructors will guide you slowly, starting in shallow water to help you get comfortable. You can take your time, and we’ll adjust everything to your pace.

You need to wait for at least 12 hours before you can fly after a single dive and at least 18 hours after multiple dives.

If you feel scared or nervous while diving, let your instructor know immediately using hand signals. Take deep, slow breaths to calm yourself, and remember, you can always ascend safely. At ScubaLov, we go at your pace to ensure you feel comfortable and confident.

I use prescription medication. Can I dive?

It depends on the medication and your health condition. Before diving, you’ll need to fill out a medical form. If you answer “yes” to any questions, you’ll need clearance from a doctor to ensure it’s safe for you to dive. Safety first!

It is advisable to complete a medical questionnaire before going for a dive. If you have any pre-existing medical condition, you will need a medical clearance from your doctor/physician. If you are above 50 years of age, you will need a medical clearance from your doctor/physician even if you have no medical conditions. If you are under 50 years of age and have no medical conditions, you can sign a self-declaration.

Even if you’re a doctor, it’s recommended to have another medical professional sign your form. This ensures an unbiased evaluation of your fitness to dive and aligns with diving safety protocols.

What is the depth limit for PADI Discover Scuba Diving?

The depth limit for the PADI Discover Scuba Diving Program is 12 meters (40 feet). It’s designed to give beginners a safe and exciting taste of the underwater world.

If, for some reason, your course is left incomplete, we will be able to refund you some money for what is left to be done. You can complete the course with us at a later date or you can obtain a referral form from us to complete your course elsewhere within 12 months time.

You can do up to three dives a day, subject to availability and pre-booking.

Your diving depth depends on your certification level. If you have signed up for Discover Scuba Dive, the maximum depth you dive to will be 12 metres (40 feet). Open Water Certified Divers can dive to 18 metres, while Advanced Open Water Certified Divers can go up to 30 metres. Only divers certified with Deep Speciality can dive upto 40 metres, which is the depth limit of recreational diving.

You should ideally be fit and medically healthy. The training for the Discover Scuba Dive and Open Water Course might feel strenuous, so you should be prepared for a fair bit of physical activity. Swimming proficiency is only required for PADI Certified Courses. Read Medical Considerations Section for more!

I am a certified diver, but I haven’t dived in a long time. What must I do before I dive again?

If it has been more than 6 months since you last dived, we advise you to undertake a ‘Refresher’ course, to revisit standard scuba diving skills and safety procedures.

Havelock and Neil Islands offer more than one standout feature to your diving trip. There are more than 800 species for you to discover, and some pelagic encounters to keep you on the edge. From Manta Rays to Dolphins, we are always surprised. We have a lot in store for macro ethusiasts as well, from nudibranchs to crabs and ghostpipefishes. The dive sites bless us with stunning corals, abundant marine life, mesmerizing underwater structures, currents, and relaxation – you name it and you shall find it!

How do I book my spot for any courses or fun dives?

All our courses and fun dives can be booked via an online link supported by Razorpay. You can reach us for more details on Whatsapp, Instagram, or mail us at dive@scubalov.in

We highly recommend signing up for your slot or course beforehand to guarantee your spot. Visit us at the divedice center one day before the date of your activity to complete all your formalities. For Discover Scuba Divers, you must fill out a medical consent form and sign up on the PADI app to do some e-learning. For divers starting courses and fun divers, get yourself fitted for the equipment you will be using for the next few days and fill out a medical consent form. On the day of your dive, report to the dive centre on or before time and experience the magic of the Andaman Sea.

We have tie-ups with hotels for a range of budgets which we can book for you on the Island. We also run an incredibly adorable homestay called the Loveshack where we can accommodate you at a minimum cost.

We accept cash and online payments via Razorpay. Please note that a 2% surcharge applicable on credit card payments. We also accept bank transfers. You should also note that network connectivity is sometimes a challenge here, and you might struggle with OTPs. We have a card machine available in the Havelock dive centre, but not in Neil Island.

Wherever you are coming from, take a flight to Port Blair and then a ferry to either Havelock Island or Neil Island, as per your booking. You can opt for either government ferries or private ferries. We recommend the government ferries if you would like to have your filmy moment– standing on the deck, wind in your hair, and an occasional sighting of dolphins and flying fishes! For more info, read our essential guide to Andaman Islands

We recommend booking your ferries before your flights so that you can plan your travel better and reach Havelock Island or Neil Island on the same day. If you would rather like some down time before some action-packed days, reach us for some great recommendations and deals!

How can I continue my Scuba Diving Journey?

You can continue your scuba diving journey by enrolling in a PADI Open Water Diver Course. This certification allows you to dive anywhere in the world up to 18 meters (60 feet). From there, you can explore advanced courses, specialties, and even professional levels!

Can I wear contact lenses or glasses while diving?

Yes, you can scuba dive with contact lenses! Soft contact lenses are generally better since they’re less likely to move or get dislodged. If you wear glasses, you can use a dive mask with prescription lenses to see clearly underwater.

Underwater, we use hand signals to communicate. For example, a thumbs-up means “go up,” and an “OK” sign means “I’m fine.” Your instructor will teach you all the essential signals before the dive.

For your first scuba diving experience, bring swimwear, a towel, and a change of clothes. Reef-safe sunscreen and a reusable water bottle are also helpful. All diving gear will be provided, so just come ready to have fun!

Rain? No problem—you’re getting wet anyway! Rain only affects the surface and not the deeper depths. The ocean will always surprise you with incredible visibility on cyclonic days, no sight on sunny days, and rare sightings in unexpected dive sites!
